Heather Sherratt Handweaving

Heather’s classic handwoven clothing designs emphasize the colours and textures of her handmade fabrics to create accessories for all seasons. As a production handweaver for almost 50 years, Heather designed long-lasting clothes in wool, cotton, mohair, silk, tencel, linen and alpaca. Colour sets Heather’s work apart – her items are instantly identifiable due to varied warps and unique weft choices for each piece. With the recent increased availability of new fibres such as bamboo, seasilk and nettle, as well as hand-dyed yarns, Heather has really been able to play with textures and drape of fabrics to make some dressier items. In her words “I aim to use interesting blends in both warp and weft, both so the colours stand alone and so they emphasize the weave. When people think of weaving, it’s sometimes ‘bulky woolly things’ and I enjoy breaking that stereotype to make woven, wearable art.”
