I create functional and sculptural nerikomi ceramics using stoneware and porcelain clay that I hand-colour with stains and underglazes. Rather than applying surface decoration, I build patterns directly into the clay by layering, compressing, slicing, and reassembling coloured clay into patterned blocks.
All work is designed, constructed, and finished by hand in my studio. Inspired by patterns found in nature, I design and colour the clay, construct patterned slabs or blocks, and form each piece through a combination of hand-building and wheel finishing. Surfaces are meticulously refined through trimming and sanding before firing. Each piece is then glazed by hand using food-safe glazes, including my own formulations, and glaze-fired to maturity to reveal the pattern embedded within the clay body.
